HAPPY THAI NEW YEAR...!!
06:00am departure suck....! Today I'm leaving the island of Koh Phangan, and heading to the town of Krabi on the west coast of Thailand. I didn't want to depart so early, however today is Songkran in Thailand... A bank holiday, to celebrate the Thai New Year. You'll find out later why I'm glad I left so early!!
My taxi transport was coming to pick me up from the Lazy House Hostel at 6, so my alarm was set for 5:30, with a back up at 5:45 in case the first didn't wake me. My bags were all pack the night before (all pack in plastic bags then in my rucksack!!). I had to wake up the reception guy Taco, as I needed to hand the key in, and get my deposit! Left for the port at Thong Sala. All I wanted to do at this point is sleep... So as soon as I got on the boat, I laid down, iPhone headphones in, and slept... The boat was making a stop on Koh Samui, I woke up when the engines were turned off. But we still had about 90 minutes until mainland. Drifted in and out of sleep!
Off loaded, and then joined our coaches to the destination that we were heading to, jumped on a double decker coach, and got comfortable.... It would be 3 hours until we reached Krabi. Up until now, I hadn't seen anything relating to Songkran.... We were on the bus 2 minutes, and I saw 4 kids having a water fight, and chucking water at the cars, and scooters driving past! They looked like they were having so much fun!! All I can say is this was just the start of it....
A lot of the route was like duel carriageway, so was pretty quick moving, and ever mile or so, there would be a group of about 10 people, of all ages, kids, adults and even grandparents on the road side with water butts and water guns!! They would be soaking everything that drove past... At one point I had fallen asleep, and I got woken up by water slapping the windscreen of the coach! Lol. Then the next crazy thing, I started to see trucks with open backs, driving along with a couple of water butts, and a hand full of kids... They were doing drive by soaking...! Mum and dad sat in the front of the vehicle (bone dry!), kids of all ages in the back, and when one of these cars would drive by the roadside kids they would have a massive water fight!!! Amazing... This was happening all the way to Krabi. Luckily our driver parked straight outside the door, and I grabbed my bag, and ran! All my stuff was protected by plastic bags, but if I could get away with out them getting wet I would try my hardest!! Checked in, and dumped my stuff in the dorm!
(They are the coolest ideas for the hostel rooms, each dorm is a subject at school, so you have the Maths, English, IT, PE dorms.. Etc etc, the list goes on. In each dorm the beds relate to something in that subject! My room couldn't have been more appropriate! I'm in the ART classroom/dorm, on the bed name Picasso! Ha ha)
Ok... It's time. To brave the outside water fight, before it all looked very tame, and they were quite small water flights, with about 20 people, my hostel was on the main street in Krabi, and their must have been hundreds. Trucks going past every minute, I knew it wouldn't be long before my clothes were sticking to me, walked out the hostel... And got 3 buckets of water chucked at me, from all different directions!!! Water continued to fly at me, until every part if my clothing was soaked! All I could do was laugh, I went for a walk down the street, and the restaurants and bars, were all joining in, hooses were being sprayed everywhere! I then slipped, and broke my flip flop!!! Lol, so had to find some replacements! £2 for a new pair, can't complain!!
I then joined the gang at our hostel, we had a hoose, 2 water butts, and about 15 people, and we battles with the trucks driving past. I loved the fact mum and dad pull up and stop by us, as we then soak their kids! I'm sure the youngest was about 1 that I soaked!!! Lol. This then went on for about 5 hours! About 3 o'clock, the heavens opened, and wanted to join in, as a massive thunder storm when over our heads, this didn't dampen anyone sprits, and the soaking continued! I could properly talk about this for ages. But I'm just going to say my top 5 highlights!
5- Enjoyed Soaking the people wearing UK football shirts! Loads of Man Utd, and Chelsea...! One even fell over as I got him in the face with a bucket of water! (he got his scandals stuck around his anchles, as he fell- hard to explain!)
4- Most of the water is body temperature so with it being warm outside anyway, it wasn't anything major! Add some ice into the bucket, and it makes it so much fun! (dont trought the ice!) Hearing the screams when you chuck ice cold water at people! Sadly we were not the only ones to have thought of this, and getting ice cold water down the back isn't fun.! I just then chucked a bucket of warm water over myself, to warm me back up!
3- Soaking Kids was great! The younger the better, the first few I felt bad, but when you see mum and dad egging you in to soak their kids! You do what your told!!
2- people with rucksacks were good to soak. They try to run, but it's not going to happen!!!!
1- OK. Number 1... People on scooters! In Thailand everyone has a scooter of all ages, so everyone is whizzing about in them...! Getting a small bucket of water, and soaking them was quality!! Even better if you have the ice cold water...!!! You would think they would be having accidents all over the place, but they didn't!!!
It was about 17:30 when I left, I was cold by now, and wanted to get into some dry clothes. I was starving as well. So went and got something to eat, and put in my laundry! As I have very few clean clothes at the moment! Then chilled out, uploaded Koh Phagnan onto Facebook, and needed sleep!! Water flights are hard work!
(right- I want to know how many people are actually reading these... Otherwise, no point in doing them!! Comment below!! You don't have to say anything... Just name, or made up name!!!) laters.... Z z z z z z z Night.
