After some contemplation we decided that we should do Fraser Island and this was definately a good shout! Despite some intervals of crap weather the 4x4 beach driving was a really good laugh.
The first morning of a tour we had to go and collect are 4x4 and buy supplies for the next 3 days. This involved all of our group putting $20 into a kitty and hoping that the two people who went to the supermarket bought decent food...they didn't but this just a added to the fun of the trip. They also bought copius amounts of 'goon' (cheap australian wine which has traces of fish and eggs)
Then we departed for the ferry to the worlds largest sand island which apparently has more sand than the sahara desert and on arriving on the island we soon realised that the roads weren't really roads at all, more like tracks and the 4x4 wasn't the most comfortable of cars, we were sitting on wooden benches in the back of the van as it bounced all over the place.
On the first day we had one near miss with another car but that was all. We went to a couple of lakes which were really cool and then headed back to set up our tent. as the roads are so poor it takes forever to get from one place to another so it limits how much you can do in a day.
That evening we had a BBQ but i have no idea what the meat on the BBQ was, our first meal. This was then followed by alot of drinking games, mostly iniated by an Irish couple in our group...
The next morning, everyone got up at about 9 and was feeling slightly hungover. We then headed to a Sharks breeding ground, and a natural feature called champagne pools which was pretty cool. After this we headed to a shipwreck on the island and then a creek which you can float down.
We then headed back upto base camp for a second night of drinking games and rancid food. It turned out to be Spagetti Bolognaise which was actually pretty good, compared to the previous night at least! However, the cheap wine definately didn't get better.
On our last day we left for lake Mckenzie! It was amazing. The water was so fresh and clean even the bad weather couldn't ruin it. It made the trip! We left there for the ferry back to the mainland!
Brilliant trip, well worth doing! Next stop Brisbane!
