So we decided we would push on from Lincoln, NE to Jackson Hole, Wyoming last night. Jackson lies at the southern edge of Yellowstone N.P. and is a popular tourist destination especially in summer. We hadn't been able to pre-book any accommodation while we were on the road, so we flew by the seat of our pants a bit hoping that we'd find a vacancy when we arrived, and thankfully we did…just! We chose to have a bit of a sleep-in before we headed off to explore Yellowstone, hoping to see bears, moose, elk, deer, and whatever else decided to cross our path.
Well, before we even got to the Park entrance we saw a herd of Bison grazing out in some pasture not far from the road! That gave us a buzz. Their heads are redonculously big! The scenery throughout the park was spectacular. There are numerous lakes that are within the National Park and the size of them just blew us away; especially Yellowstone Lake in the centre of the Park.
It's pretty funny, you always know when there's something worth stopping and looking at as you drive through the park, cause there's always at least 20 to 30 cars parked up on the side of the road and people spread all along with their cameras out. We saw elk, deer and gazelles this way. Unfortunately we didn't see any moose or bears, although on our way up to Old Faithful Geyser we saw a wolf which was awesome! He scooted across the road and stopped for a few seconds just behind us. A woman in the car behind us went to hop out and take a photo, but as she did the wolf turned her way, and she was back in the car as quick as a flash!
Old Faithful was well worth seeing. For those that don't know about Old Faithful, it's an erupting Geyser in the Park that shoots steam/boiling water to a height of about 50m and it erupts about every 90mins. They even predict when it will erupt. We just missed the previous eruption, so we had to wait about an hour to see it, but it was cool. By that stage it was getting fairly late in the day and we were running out of sunlight, and still had about a 5hrs drive on to Missoula, Montana, so we decided not to drive through the whole Park, as we wouldn't be able to see a great deal anyway.
