We got in to D.C. around 8pm last night and met up with our tour guide for the next couple of days, Heidi Kimie Hartley - a hook-up thanks to Dana Mulvany. Kimie took us to Washington Adventist University where she organized for us to stay in the Men's Res there before we made our way over to her house to meet her husband and two kids—Tina & Jonathan. Kimie and the kids piled into our car and we set off to go exploring. Tina & Jonathan were super excited to hang out with Rowdy Roo and get plenty of crazy photos with him. We went to the Lincoln Memorial, the Korean and Vietnam War Memorials, the Washington Monument, sat with Einstein, drove past the Pentagon (that's about as close as we could get), visited the WWII War Memorial which was real cool, and saw the White House and the Capitol building from a distance - it was mint being in the "heart" of America taking in all the monumental sights of D.C.
By around 11.30pm we were all starting to get a little weary, so we made our way back to WAU to get some shut-eye.
The real reason we were in D.C. was for our school fair this morning at Takoma Academy, Takoma Park, Maryland. Before the fair, WAU took all the recruiters out for breakfast at a place called Eggspectations, which oddly enough deals a lot in eggs! It was great, thanks WAU. Following the fair we headed back into town to check out some of the museums. We went to the Smithsonian National Museums of American History and Natural History. By now the weather had turned bad, so it was raining pretty much non-stop all afternoon, so indoors was the best place to be!
Oh! As we were walking down the street toward the museums we came across a police road closure right outside the White House and were instructed not to go any further. We were curious to know what we were being stopped for, but the policeman we spoke to was tight-lipped. A few minutes later about half-a-dozen motorcycles rounded the corner followed by at least 10 SUV's (filled with Secret Service), an ambulance and another armoured truck. We assumed it could only be the President, in fact, one of the other bystanders was confident he saw Obama sitting in one of the SUV's, so that was heaps cool.
In the evening we met up with Kimie and her family again and they took us out for dinner at an Asian buffet restaurant, we certainly didn't go home hungry!
