I was fortunate to have a really light flight out of Torshavn. They put me way in the back to balance the weight. Either fat butt or fat head. Window seat let me bid adieu to the hikers paradise.
This is one of those times when I've been somewhere just before/when it was discovered. I worry about the impact on the right knit Faroese culture regarding what I see as a big uptick in tourism. I just read that Watertown Park was turning away visitors this week because they reached carrying capacity.
I'm in Iceland now, and I expect they will enact tourism quotas to deal with the impacts. One of the things I noticed today, while I was waiting for the bus, was a cruise ship disgorging its contents. All of a sudden, people everywhere.
I also read an article about the impacts of tourism in areas like Croatia and Barcelona...where locals are turning to quasi violence to protest the negative impacts of tourism. Something to ponder. Of course, I'm on my second Icelandic happy hour beer, so it's pondering time!
