This coffee had a confused flavour to it. Milky, yet muddy, thin, yet earthy. It was well made, and served at a good temperature. We think the issue was with the roast therefore. Too bitter. Next.AF

A take away from a little independent shop in historic Oatlands. They were playing 'Michelle' by the Beatles, which pleased Alice endlessly. Served a little too hot, when this has cooled down the flavour blossomed. A chocolate journey, that perhaps ended a little smokey, but very tasty never the less. Sweet too. An unexpected triumph. To start, we packed up our things and asked Mo, the manager at Narrara backpackers, if we can leave our stuff in the hostel. At least we assumed he was Mo. We're at the Hobart Mission cafe for breakfast. It's just around the corner from our hostel, and all profits are reinvested, providing meals for those who need them. There's a token-based "pay-it-forward" scheme here too, so that you can add the cost of a coffee, breakfast or meal to your own bill, which will then be provided to someone who couldn't otherwise afford it. Exceedingly tasty quiche with salad and chutney as a late lunch, plus banana cake. Quite strong coffee, with pretty latte art. Good body, bitter towards the end of the cup. I'm must be in a generous mood today. Alex says this is average, but as there are so many 4s in our rankings, I decide that inflation has made mid-3s an average score. Better than this morning (the actual beans of a higher quality, perhaps) by half a point. AB
