Test Run
The most perfect sunny still day meant we had to go back to Grindelwald in the hope that the First Flyer zipline would be operating & hooray - it was!!!! Up the gondola again to the top & were strapped into the zipline seats by a friendly young guy from Perth of all places! Loved the fast ride down 800m at 84km/hr which sounds fast but was actually plenty of time for me to take still photos & a movie while enjoying the adrenaline thrill........ Decided to miss the other downhill activities here so we could take the train to Jungfraujoc - the highest railway station in Europe. The trip goes across the base of the north face of the Eiger then turns into a tunnel 7km long through the mountain - an incredible feat of engineering in 1888. There are two viewpoints from within the rock where we could get off the train & see the view which was amazing & we were reminded of the fascinating story of the mountain climbers who attempted to climb this face of The Eiger & the rescue attempt was from one of these openings. Coming out to the Jungfraujoc is awesome in the true meaning of the word - snow, peaks & the fabulous Altesch Glacier - the largest in the Alps which is about 27km long. Thought we'd walk to a hut but we found the going too hard in the snow & perhaps the altitude...... or perhaps our age!!!!! We enjoyed a few other activities on offer - the ice palace with it's tunnel & animals carved out of the ice & walking on the plateau taking many photos. Didn't feel the need to purchase watches or chocolates like most other tourists!! The trip back down the mountains was beautiful with the sun shining on the glaciers & peaks plus the pretty little towns & railway stations. What a wonderful day it was.
