Test Run
After a full day of excellent & easy train travel across France from Lille to Interlaken in Switzerland we were underwhelmed by our unfriendly greeting at the hotel. The bed frame was new & made a terrible noise at every move, even walking on the floor nearby but a few words with the manager had everything repaired - thank goodness & we felt much happier to be there. Walked around the town & lake before the obligatory fondue dinner, which was delicious! For our first full day we decided to go down the valley to Grindelwald & go on the zip line & scooter bikes down the mountain there. There was cloud over the high peaks & a wind that meant the First Flyer wasn't operating so instead of all those activities we went on the cliff walk & then hiked the 4km or so to Bachalpsee - a little lake. In still sunny weather there are stunning reflections of the snow capped peaks here but we had swirling cloud making for a different experience. The walk was undulating but reasonably easy & serenaded by the sound of cowbells all the way. Back in Interlaken we went up to Harder Kulm by very steep funicular railway. Watched the sunset views over the town & lakes from the platform jutting out from the cliff then had dinner in the restaurant. Interlaken is a very multinational city with many tourists from Asian & Arabic countries & we felt it was almost a case of "spot the Swiss". The streets are lined with watch shops & souvenir stores with every size, style & colour of Swiss Army knife.
