Test Run
Thought we'd keep our feet on the ground today & explore the local region a little so we set off along the escarpment winding down to the tiny village of Gimmelwald. Macromum was in her element taking lots of photos of plants, flowers & scenery - all beautiful. Switzerland's Alps are scattered with tiny wooden & stone huts with stacks of wood tidily cut & stacked for the winter. They appear randomly on hillsides, in villages & even beside the hiking path amongst the grasses & weeds & of course there's the ever present sounds of the cowbells. Walking, even downhill was hot work so we stopped for a beer before taking the cable car down to the valley floor, took off a few layers of clothing & walked alongside the fast flowing river from Stechelberg to the Trummelbach Falls where we climbed the hundreds of steps past all 10 places where you can see the glacier meltwater roaring down a narrow tunnel within the rocks. The top couple of falls were almost scary being in the dark & roaring down at such a rate - I've rarely seen the awesome power of nature so close. We continued our walk along the valley floor past some parachutists who had jumped from a helicopter & landed in a field next to the path - what a place to jump! Not far from there was the town of Lauterbrunen & a beautiful waterfall which Geoff climbed up to while I rested in the shade & admired the view. Had one last walk around Murren in the evening sunset light before a final dinner then next morning took the cable car & trains across the country via Lucerne to Zurich & our flight to Singapore the next morning. Goodbye to Switzerland - it was the most beautiful place to visit & I'm so grateful I finally got there & had these wonderful experiences. A few particular memories - cow bells, hikers "of a certain age" with their little backpacks & walking poles, dogs on trains & on the hikes, wood stacks & cattle barns for winter, window boxes full of flowers, paragliders, very friendly helpful Swiss people & precision timing on all the transport.
