Test Run
After doing several rail bookings with the extremely friendly, helpful & efficient rail staff we journeyed to Murren by train via Lauterbrunen, gondola up the cliff to Grutschalp & train along the cliff edge. Stayed at the lovely Hotel Bellevue which was recommended to us by Michelle Englart & we had a view to the south west across mountains & the very pretty town. Our first stop for a coffee was the hotel terrasse (terrace) with brilliant views across the valley to the towering mountains of the Eiger, Monch & Jungfrau. This is another one of those special places in the world where photos & words can never do justice to the spectacular landscape & we feel so privileged & grateful to have been able to experience these mountains. The cable car to the Schilthorn goes through the village so we decided to spend the rest of the day up there. This was the site of filming James Bond's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" in 1969 & many scenes were filmed inside & on the terrace so we had a leisurely lunch doing 2 rounds of the rotating restaurant. The 360degree views at 2,970m are amazing & on this clear day we could see across Switzerland, to France & probably Italy. The high Alps of Eiger, Monch & Jungfrau with all their glaciers were just across the valley - stunning! Stopped at the next gondola station of Birg on the way down to go on another wire cliff edge walk. This also has sections of glass floor, single wire, cattle grid & wire tunnel to negotiate apart from just walking on open wire mesh. Luckily this didn't worry us & it's easy to concentrate on the incredible views rather than look down!
