My Big Adventure
So today we had a little bit of a lie in - we didn't get up until 7.30! When we got up, we headed for breakfast in the lodge which was very yummy and then headed back to the room so we could check out. After check out we headed to the pool area to wait for our transfer to the airport. While we were waiting we played cards, ate ice cream and chatted to some of the other people also waiting to check out. We also spotted some of the local wildlife including a little mouse that mum almost sat on as it was hiding under her cushion, we also saw some grey-headed honeyeaters, crested pigeons and some galahs eating from a hole in the tree. Just before lunch we were going to grab some lunch and while we were sitting by the pool a little snake slithered past. We sat and looked at it even took some photos. It wasn't until we saw some panicked looks from the locals and they suggested that the snake catcher needed to be called that we realised it probably wasn't as innocent as it seems. So one of the resort workers trapped it under a towel and put rocks around it (if you lower the temperature of a snake it calms it down - apparently) and we all patiently waited for the snake catcher to come and collect him. Within about 5 minutes he arrived with a dustbin and what can only be described as a litter picker in his hand. He removed the rocks and the towel and then picked up the snake and put it into the bin so he could release it back into the bush. Apparently the snake was a baby brown, one of the top ten most poisonous snakes in the world!!! Oops!! At least we know for next time and will be a little bit more aware in the future. So after all the excitement of the snake. We had a quick bite to eat and then caught our coach to the airport and jumped on our flight to Cairns - bidding farewell to Yulara, Uluru and Kata Tjuta, and taking some totally amazing memories and experiences with us! On our way to the airport we were lucky enough to see 2 black kites flying along the coach and kestrel perched on a fence. Once again I had a window seat for the flight, so I had a birds eye view of Australia for the entire journey. After a couple of hours and an early departure we arrived in Cairns. We got off the plane and walked through the airport to the collect our luggage. I could have spent a fortune in the airport looking at the different shops - but that will have to wait for when we leave Cairns! So we collected our baggage headed to the bus stop to get our transfer to collect our car. For the next 9 days we will be taking to the roads in our very glamorous top of the range white Hyundai i20!!! Once we had got our car, we then took the 30 second drive to our hotel. The drive was very successful with no problems so I think we should be ok for the next few days. After the short journey, we checked into our hotel, the Ibis Styles and then headed down to the night market and for a walk around the lagoon and along the esplanade. As we were walking to the market I saw a flying fox and then we saw lots of bats flying around too. After having a quick look around and eating some dinner we headed back to our hotel, stopping off to look at the Anzac Day flowers and wreaths after the ceremony today. When we got back to our hotel we got ready for our first road trip tomorrow before heading to bed to catch some zzzz!!!
