My Big Adventure
This morning started at 4.45am in pretty much the same way as yesterday, although slightly more rushed!! Get up and showered, grab and eat a take away breakfast and head to the bus ready for sunrise. Although today we were watching the sunrise over Kata Tjuta rather than Uluru or so we thought. Kata Tjuta is another sacred and spiritual range with 36 domes. Bigger than Uluru and that's where we headed this morning. We arrived on the bus and got another breakfast bag and then drove to the sunrise platform where we had a view of both Uluru and Kata Tjuta. So as I sipped on my hot chocolate we watched the sunrise over Uluru and saw the light reflected off the Olgas. Another fantastic sunrise in such beautiful surroundings and this one was even more magical in some respects because it was hidden behind the clouds. After the sunrise we jumped back in the bus had a quick loo stop (the only reason I mention this is because the loos were long drops - which is an experience in itself - don't forget a clothes peg!) and then headed to our first stop. Here we walked to the Karu lookout on the way to the Valley of the Winds. We then headed back to the car park and took a short drive to our second stop and walked up to the Walpa Gorge. Both of these walks had amazing views and we were able to find out more about the geology of the area and the plants and creatures living there. On our way back from the trip I saw a sand goanna slithering back in to the bush. We were also really lucky to be able to see a thorny devil. This is a lizard which unfortunately decided to walk down the road so our guides stopped to pick it up and put in back into the bush. But before this we got the opportunity to look more closely at this amazing little creature who only eats ants and never actually drinks the water but just stands in a puddle and it soaks up through its skin to its stomach. They have to be careful though because if they stand in the puddle too long they drown themselves! When we arrived back at the hotel we grabbed some lunch, had a quick power nap (the lack of sleep is catching up with us) and we then jumped on the shuttle bus into the town square. First stop was the art museum where we looked at all the aboriginal artwork and dot paintings (pointillism). While we were there we were told about an astronomy talk. We thought we would stay and listen as we it might recap what we had learnt last night. Unfortunately it was more about the technology and development of telescopes so not quite what we were imagining. After the talk we walked around the Tjunga festival, listened to the music and looked at the local market stalls. We then popped into the different shops in the town square and then got the bus back to the hotel for ice creams and packing and a relax before dinner. Just we before we went to dinner I was lucky enough to have a lovely Skype with Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 (and obviously Mrs Ross) at school and got to answer lots of their questions. It was lovely to catch up with them and see them all again. After our Skype we then went for dinner where we had a cook your own BBQ! We bought our meat from the counter and then cooked it ourselves on one of the BBQs. It was very yummy and the perfect end to our stay in Uluru. After dinner there was just enough time for a little relax before heading to bed and the best news is there is no early get up tomorrow so I get a lie in!! Woohoo!!!
