Both slept well on the train. Arrived in Madurai and went straight away to book train tickets to Puducherry (Pondicherry),an hour and a half later with two trips to see the main ticket officer who managed to get us on the 11pm tonight. We headed to a bar I'd heard about called Apollo 96, it was just as I'd expected. Cold beers in a space ship style bar so far from the heat and hussle and bussle of outside. Took the chance to get all the postcards written and posted them on the way to the brightly coloured Sri Meenakshi Sundareshwarer temples. We were persuaded by a local man to go up on the roof terrace of a near by shop that has views of the Temples, knowing we'd have to have a look around the shop on the way back down but the views really were perfect, much better than if we'd seen the Temples from ground level and we weren't hassled at all on the way back down so well worth it. All of the temples are repainted every 10 years and it takes 1 year to complete, something we both agreed wouldn't be something we'd ever be interested in doing. With the heat of the sun and roof top sunset it really felt like we could have been in the Middle East, Karbul springs to mind but recon that probably because of the John Simpson book I'm reading. There was a small silver box that had caught my eye in another shop so we agreed we'd not pay more than R500 for it, he wanted R6500 and wouldn't budge so no silver toothpick box today! Tom had seen that the hotel the Apollo 96 bar was in had a roof top restaurant so we walked up to the top and had a lovely meal with the most amazing view over the city, you could hear all the beeping of horns and see all the lights but it was nice from up so high. Straight to sleep on the train, early start tomorrow.
