What is it with these prehistoric guys and stones?
Spent today at Carnac where there are 3000 standing stones, laid out in straight(ish) lines. Walked the whole 4kms (both ways) Amazing what they managed to do 6000 years ago. Lots of theories about why they're there, from an army being turned to stone by a Pope, to their being grave markers or having treasure buried beneath them. Sally's made more sense - they moved them out of the way so they could use the land for agriculture and stood them on end so they didn't take up too much space! Feasted on wild blackberries during the walk - yummy.
Continued in to town to the Museum of Pre-History. An excellent collection of artefacts from Megolithic and Neolithic periods, mostly discovered in the 1920s by a husband and wife team
Late in the afternoon we went to another prehistoric site at Arzon - this one a massive stone tomb, constructed and reconstructed over many thousand years. Was a bit disappointing. Unfortunately some nasty Germans wrecked most of it in WW2 building a bunker in half of it!
More trouble finding a bed for the night at Vannes, but managed to get into a Quick Hotel this time.....not to bad but bigger than a shoe box! Went to McDonald's for dinner as virtually everything thing else is closed (being Sunday)...never seen McDonald's staff run before! Their drive through was so busy the staff were running between the cars and the order windows, having written-down the orders on scraps of till-tape....at least it kept the queue moving and Ian entertained while we sat in the cool inside.
