Time for a look around La Rochelle before we continue south and before the throngs wake up. Little drive through the park and then down to the harbourside fortifications.......wait a minute...is that a Kiwi accent I hear? And a bit further a couple pointing at a globe sculpture at where NZ should be! "You're along way from home" Ian said......and sure enough, he was right and the couple were not only Kiwi's but from Wellington as well! Living and working in the UK for a while, they were visiting La Rochelle for a week.
Then it was off to Rocquefortte for a cheesy lunch (not really) before we went to the grotto's at Regulus to see where the Protestant's hid out during their persecution, and where one elderly woman lived up until 1992. These are little cave-like holes in the cliffside.
Then, to wash down the cheese, it was cognac for afternoon-tea at (obviously) Cognac. Arrived in the midst of a torrential downpour and had to wait a while before we could unload into the Ibis for the night. The early evening had us exploring the town with a walk in the park around the Hotel de Ville and a quick visit to one of the distilleries.
Went out later to get something for tea, but forgot where we'd seen the supermarket and got soaked looking for it, only to discover it was just around the bloody corner!
