Bern is a bit less crowded this morning, but like Innsbruck, there are delivery trucks everywhere, in front of everything you want to photograph. Anyway, had a wander through the city streets and a look through Loeb's (sort of a Swiss Kirkacaldies). We'd been able to leave the car in the hotel carpark and used the tram to get around.....pretty good value too. Had a drink and a cake in a little tea-shop.....still damned expensive at NZD$50!
Carrying on south we head to Geneve arriving in time for lunch......another mortgage required to pay the NZD$70 for 3 paninis and drinks. Drove around a bit of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) and Sally got herself a genuine Swiss Army Knife. By now our funds were near depleted so we decided not to stay the night, and headed instead to Mont Blanc to go through the tunnel. Another whopping toll of NZD$60 to only go 10km. Tunnel was a bit of nothing really but the views of Mt Blanc and the Alps on the way in and out were worth it.
Missed our exit on leaving the tunnel and ended up going back into Italy for 20km. Couldn't turn off as it was all tunnels of 2-3kms each. By the time we got back to where we needed to be it was early evening. Decided to carry on driving and headed up into the Alps. We climbed and climbed and climbed......got as high as 2,800m, but the views were spectacular, especially as the sun set. Road was in pretty good condition and it got dark as we started to head down the narrow winding bit. Passed a lot of little ski resorts that looked pretty full, so kept driving until Ian started to get tired and got an Etap in Albertville, where they had the winter Olympics in 1992.
