Day 28 Saturday 19th July Cairns-Port Douglas-Cairns It was cold last night and very cool this morning....around 11degrees.....did we really want to go snorkelling???? Once the sun came up, it did get warmer, although it was rather windy and still felt chilly.........oh well...too late to cancel now! So.....once again we took the scenic drive up to Port Douglas, stopping on the way at Ellis Beach, to have our coffee. Once in 'Port', we had some time to kill, so had late breakfast until time for our boat. We had chosen a very different type of boat this time.....a jet boat, which took us on a very fast ride to the Low Isles. This area has an accessible reef with some good coral, lots of fish, although not the really big ones you see further out, and turtles. We needed our, (complimentary), wetsuits, and although the time allocated for snorkelling was 90 minutes, no-one managed to stay in the water longer than an hour......too cold. However we were glad we went and we saw lots of fish and were the only ones out of the 14 passengers to see a turtle. The 15 minute ride back was even more thrilling because the wind had picked up increasing the swell to over 2metres. All in all, a worthwhile outing! Back at camp we took down the awning ready for tomorrow's departure. We looked at the underwater video footage.....at least we got the turtle..... and the accompanying photo is a 'still' from the video, of some lovely bat fish. Afterwards, we had showers, then dinner. Our usual bush stone curlew came to visit, as he has done each evening.....don't know why....he just 'checks us out' and moves on! It was cloudy around sunset, but then the sky cleared to a clear, starry evening.
