Days 20-21 Friday 11th July & Saturday 12th July
Palm Cove (and Port Douglas)
I think that this is only the second time in our recent camping history, ( i.e. the last seven years), that we have camped for so long in one place. It has been very relaxing, (apart from some noisy nights), and has combined our love of the outdoor camping life, with our love of eating out in nice restaurants!!! We have enjoyed morning and evening walks along the beach, and the pleasantly warm weather; although it has been noticeably cooler these past two days because of a stiff breeze. You don't have to be lazy here...there is lots to see and do, but we are fortunate to have seen and done most things in past visits to this area. Hence our 'chilled-out' few days......apart from the sea-kayaking.....that was energetic!!
Yesterday I was able to have a massage at the Spa in one of the nearby resort hotels, so that was another indulgence only available when not in a remote area!
Later in the day we took a drive to 'check out' another campground, and were able to book a few days there from Wed to Sunday next week, instead of coming back here. It is in an area with some nice walks and waterfalls to visit.
Friday evening saw a quick visit to the night markets in the adjacent car-park.....they were not that exciting....followed by a nice meal at a Thai restaurant.
Today, Saturday, we took a short drive north to Port Douglas along the amazingly scenic 28km stretch of World Heritage Listed, Captain Cook Highway. This part of the highway....if you can call an incredibly winding road a highway......hugs the coastline, providing great views and a huge distraction for drivers! Little wonder there are signs proclaiming 'high accident zone'. Once we arrived in 'Port', as the locals call it, we enjoyed a coffee at the Marina and watched the cruise boats depart for the daily trip to the reef. We had a walk along the main street to the beach......very windy today...and then up to the lookout. We bought some fresh seafood for our lunch and then headed back to camp where we feasted on oysters, crab, bugs and prawns, accompanied by a glass (or two!) of chilled white wine. Delicious.
This afternoon we have been preparing for tomorrow's departure by generally tidying up and taking down the awning.
Heading into the Daintree National Park and up to Cape Tribulation tomorrow, but not before 'movie night' at 6pm in the BBQ area!!!
