Day 3 Tuesday 24th June
Currawinya NP To Welford NP (600km).
It was a calm night despite wind during the evening. Cool this morning though, but lovely reflections in the river. I was amused to see the little sheep family across the river again, under a tree. I chuckled as I watched, because the ewe was lying down (presumably still trying to sleep), while the twin lambs were jumping all over her and each other! Perhaps four-legged animal families are not so different from two-legged families in this regard!!!
On the way out from our camp we stopped to look at the Caiwarro HS ruins and then continued on our way. We encountered plenty of 'roos, emu and cattle on the road. Our first stop was in Eulo ( known for mud springs and date wine!), for fuel. At a 'free' camp just outside the town we had our breakfast. This camp was on the banks of the Bulloo River and looked ok for an emergency overnight stop. Our coffee break was taken between Eulo and Quilpie, where we also picked up some more wood. It was an overcast, cool day, with very little traffic. We were travelling on sealed, single lane, outback roads. We stopped in Quilpie for fuel and bread rolls. There was no Optus phone signal. Once on the Quilpie-Jundah road we were on gravel again but a good surface, with some sealed sections. As we approached Welford NP the trees became few and far and we hit clay-pan country. Again the signage to the camping area was poor but we found our way. No-one else there! We are high up on the banks of the Barcoo river, but there was access to the river at one point and we were able to get water for washing and washing-up. Around dusk another camper arrived but there was loads of space and he camped far away. We lit our fire and cooked burgers tonight. Sat by the fire and used our head torches for light to read by, before heading to bed. Still cool, but no rain.
