Day 9 Monday 30th June
Boodjamulla NP
Another cold morning.....it is unusual to be this cold so far north, and it definitely wasn't the case the last time we came here....but it was early June then.
Nevertheless the cold morning meant that we didn't need to set off very early for our walk, in order to avoid the heat! Today we had a pleasant walk through the creek vegetation and then climbed to the top of the Island Stack. Once at the top there were scenic views of the lower gorges and also down to the campsite. We were back at camp for coffee and a leisurely late morning. A chilly breeze decided us against another canoe trip and so I spent some time trying to find the purple-crowned fairy wren; a bird which is only found in this area and some parts of the Kimberley. I was unsuccessful...despite other campers telling me that they had seen them "earlier this morning"!
After lunch I decided to enlist the help of Eleanor and Albie....the 'gypsy twitchers'. Success!! I even managed to get some passable photos. The female....who doesn't have the purple crown of course, took a better photo! There is only one family group of these birds in the area......we think.....consisting of 3 females and one male..
After that excitement it was time to put our two cans of fuel into the tank, pack up the awning and generally get ship-shape for an early start tomorrow.
Then we had showers and happy hour soon followed with Eleanor and Albie and also Sarah and Paul (from a nearby campsite), as our guests.
Around dusk we made dinner, then washed up and sat around a little before it got too cold. Then headed inside to read and then bed.
