Day 6 Friday 27th June
Corella Dam to Miyumba Bush Camp (Riversleigh), via Mt Isa ( 345km)
This morning it was finger-numbingly cold, but got a little warmer once the sun was properly 'up'. The lake looked good in the morning light with great reflections of the caravans camped there.
We were on the road by 7.50 am we passed a roadside free camp which was packed with caravans....not our sort of camping at all. It looked pretty bad, in fact.
We had breakfast in Mt Isa Maccas and then got fuel and supplies. Checked in with home too, of course.
Back on the road again before 10am. Once again there were clear blue skies, and the temperature was climbing rapidly.
The road to Riversleigh ....the Camooweal-Gregory Downs road was pretty rough. There were quite a few other vehicles...well 5 or 6, I suppose, and since we didn't want to be travelling too close to their dust we stopped a couple of times, once for coffee and once for lunch.
We arrived at our designated camp at around 2pm. This camp site is not a hugely popular one since most people want to drive the extra 60 or so km straight to Lawn Hill Gorge. We were the only campers for a a couple of hours. Then some very pleasant tent campers arrived. We can't even see them from our campsite. They came over to say "hello". They are keen bird-watchers and told us that they had also been here before and that they take their chairs and wine down to the river crossing for 'happy hour'. So we joined them. We had a good chat and waved to a few vehicles going by. The vehicles were two cattle trucks and one 4WD with farm workers in. Then a ute came by and the guy stopped for a chat. He was the manager of Lawn Hill cattle station (they run 50,000 head of cattle). He told us that they had just been mustering and that a large truck would be going through in the morning to pick up some cattle. He had some great stories to tell us, particularly about how hard it is to get a decent cook......he recently had to sack one for being drunk, and another for dirty work habits.....the manager had discovered un-washed pots and pans hidden in the oven and maggots crawling underneath a chopping board!!! Now they have a young woman from Kenya to cook, apparently she is doing a great job. Before dark we made our way back to camp and had dinner. It wasn't too cold this evening and once again the stars put on a great show.
