We head down to the ferry which will take us across the lake to Ometepe, a 90 minute journey. Although an inland island, there are strong winds, a heavy swell and the crossing has a reputation for being rough and had been cancelled for 3 days last week because of wind. I pop a pill and a second one for good luck.  Luckily the boat wasn't too busy and the crossing quite smooth so all was well.

Ometepe is the largest island on Lake Nicaragua comprising two volcanoes.. still grumbling away quietly. There are signs along the main roads showing the direction to evacuate the island in the event of an eruption.. The island is very rural and grows a lot of crops including bananas. We stay in a quiet little hostal on the edge of the port of arrival, Moygalpa.

We got picked up at the dock and the very friendly young manager  Danillo  took time to explain all of which there was to see around the island.  The small local garden in the family hostel was equipped with comfy chairs and hammocks so we lazed away the rest of the day.

Next day we hired a scooter $20 from Danillo to explore the island.  We headed to the main town of  Altagracia. ..dodging pigs cattle horses and dogs on route stopping off as we pleased., at one point, to watch a baseball game. This is the national sport and even this island with a population  of  30 000  has 30 teams in  two leagues. It was good to watch the passion that this national game played by 2 local teams produced....until the rain came on.....game stopped for 5 minutes then started again with the same passion..and so the afternoon went on.
