Our accommodation for the next two nights is at San Simian Lodge at Laguna de Apoyo about 20 km from Granada. The 8km diameter lake is actually a volcanic caldera fed from within by geothermal springs.
San Simian Lodge comprises 6 simple huts with palm leaf roofs. The en suite toilets and showers are open air with a stone wall for privacy... quite a novelty. Very well maintained gardens blend in to the forest surrounding the volcano caldera and there are plenty of hammocks througout. The springs carry minerals which cause the water to be slightly salty but keep it at a comfortable 25°C. Great for swimming though the crunchy pumice pebbles on the shore make for a tricky bare foot entry and exit.
The lodge has a mongrel dog Beebie who looks a bit odd as his head, legs and body parts seem all out of proportion. He makes up for his odd looks with personality and comes with us for short walks and gazes longingly with pleading eyes at us at meal times, he then rolls on his back legs askew as a party trick but still doesn't get food at the table....he has a bowl of food and water near bar so he is well fed by his owner. The open air restaurant serves excellent food.
