No roads here so we have a very silent night and a good sleep. Breakfast is served on the decking so we can watch all the small boats and canoes coming and going.
Today we take the local passenger boat one hour down river to El Castillo. This is a smart little village considering how remote it is. Access by river boat only.
The Spanish built a fort here in 1675 to defend against pirates of the Carribean who were sailing up the river and right across Lake Nicaragua to attack Granada. For a small fee you can visit the remains of the fort which overlooks the rapids. The pirate boats had to slow down to struggle up the rapids so they made an easy target for the cannons from the fort.
Horatio Nelson made an early claim to fame here when aged 22 in 1780, he attacked and captured the inland fort with a small band of navy men. Within a few months, the Spanish recaptured from the British, by then ravaged by malaria.
We spend a few hours in El Castillo before taking the passenger boat back to Sabalos
