HAPPY MID AUTUMN FESTIVAL – MOON CAKE DAY
During the Mongolian rule in China moon cakes were used to send messages containing details of the Mongolian leaders could be overthrown. One method was hiding letters within the cake fillings and the other was printing Chinese characters, puzzles or mosaics on top of each cake. The cakes were packaged in four’s but cut into 16 pieces upon arrival. The pieces were then put together to reveal the secret message and then course eaten to hide it!
Whilst remembering the history and appreciating the bright moon, people think of relatives afar and good luck wishes are expressed on their mind. It’s estimated this year that over 16 million locals will travel back to their home town during Mid Autumn Festival and so with most cakes being round in shape it also represents the reunion of a family for this festival.
Today moon cakes are still have with many patterns of mosaics or Chinese characters printed on top. These characters usually read what the filling is which can vary from egg to ham, bean paste to coconut...
