So today we were up and doing a short half an hour walk by 9 this morning (getting my daily dose of exercise!). After that we headed onto Hobbiton which was actually a pretty cool place. Definitely going to be watching the movies when I get back home! We had a guide who showed us around the hobbit homes and then onto the Green Dragon pub where we had a free ginger beer and the choice to buy a steak and ale pie - best pie ever! After Hobbiton we headed to the next place where some of us had chosen to stay in a hostel and everyone else headed onto the Maori village. I chose the cheaper option of staying in the hostel and then heading to the Maori village in the evening to watch the show and have dinner whereas some people paid extra to stay overnight in the village. So I got picked up in the evening and when I got there I met up with the rest of the group and we watched the opening ceremony. You're not allowed to laugh or smile during the opening as it's considered disrespectful so I was literally biting the inside of my cheek to stop myself! After the ceremony we were split into groups and we had to walk around and talk to different Maori people about their talents including; how to do the haka, how they made baskets and clothes from weaving leaves, how they did tattoos, and other talents. After that we watched as some of the men showed us food they had been cooking in a hole in the ground covered in hot rocks, soil and mats on top. Then, whilst the food was being prepared, we watched the evening show where the Maori people did their tribal dances for us. Once dinner was ready we all went through and helped ourselves to the food. Omg it was so good!! It was like the Christmas dinner I missed out on last year (eating hungry jacks just wasn't the same). Then for pudding they had passion fruit pavlova (not as good as yours mum don't worry!). Afterwards I headed back to the hostel with some other groups of people and went to bed. These long days full of activities are wearing me out! Speak soon x
