Today and tomorrow we are in Florence. The main attraction here is the Duomo cathedral. It was built and paid for by the florentine people a long time ago, and it is breathtaking. It looks like a painting, and the details are very intricate and unique. It's very large, and only a two minute walk from our hotel. We wandered around the outside of it, but I was tired (I'll explain why in a bit), hangry (when you're moody because you're hungry) and cutting my nose off to spite my face. So, we went to a café right next door which had misty water jets to keep you cool. We both ordered sandwiches, I had chicken salad and Paul had an omelette sandwich (I know). They both came with salad and chips. We waited for an hour for these to come, and when they did the chips were cold, as were the chicken and omelette. I had to have a Bellini to stop feeling sorry for myself and cheer up. After this we went for a walk through the streets of Florence. The only traffic is taxis, and Italian cities are very different to ours. The streets are cobbled and narrow, and the buildings are an orangey terracotta colour.
We found a supermarket and got some water and an ice cream, and started to walk back to the hotel. For dinner we went back to La Dantesca, where we went last night as it is cheap and cheerful and the food is fresh and lovely.
The reason I am so tired. The walls are paper thin at this hotel, and our room (61) is at the end of a corridor so that 60s front door is right next to ours. When someone knocks on that door or puts a key in the lock, it sounds like it is our door. Does this make sense? Along this corridor is also 59, 58 and 57. In rooms 60-57 there are a group of spaniards. They are about my age and all male. NIGHTMARE. There are about 8 or 9 of them in total. They've been here since we got here and they are so LOUD. They run up and down the corridors banging non stop to wake each other up at 8 for the breakfast, they go out at about 1am making a racket and come back in at 5am making the same amount of noise again. I'm a light sleeper so every time they make noises I wake up and can't sleep until they stop. I've shouted at them to shut up, and Paul has gone and told them were trying to sleep but nothing has stopped. We have even opened the door on a couple of occasions thinking someone was banging on our door. We went to reception to see if we can change rooms but they said that they're checking out tomorrow morning- thank god. Normally I like Spanish people obviously but not when we're backpacking and doing long, hot days travelling.
We put the 'do not disturb' sign on the door this morning so we could have a lie in, and after the spaniards had make their Noise we could go back to sleep. At about 9:30 the cleaner came in the room and started shouting in Italian about changing the sheets, we said do not disturb???? And she was holding the sign in her hand. She left and then 10 minutes later reception rang asking if we wanted our room cleaned. DO NOT DISTURB?!?!!!!!! We didn't get back to sleep!
