Today we are off to Venice. The train was about an hour long and it wasn't too busy. We walked about 2 miles to the Basilica, where most things seemed to be happening. The pathways were winding and we were walking down narrow passages between buildings. Surprisingly there were a lot of bridges over canals! It was very picturesque but busy. We walked over the Rialto bridge and carried on. It was absolutely boiling and the walk seemed to take forever. We went for lunch and had cocktails. After lunch we were walking along and then all of a sudden Paul wasn't next to me and I had no idea where he was. I carried on to where we were going in case he was there but he wasn't. I was walking around looking for him for about 20 minutes, and then my phone started ringing and it was him! At that point I saw the back of his head about 100 metres from me and I was so relieved. He'd borrowed someone's phone to ring me, as I had hoped he would do. After that minor scare we were in the main Piazza, and the basilica was huge, and very grand. There was a long queue in the sun and you had to pay to get in so we didn't fancy it enough to do that. Right next to it was a tall tower you could go up so we queued for that instead. It was a bit like Venice's Shard, except it was really old and not at high up.
The view was amazing, and you could see a lot of the islands that make up the town. It was packed up there though and really hot! We came down and started to make our way back to the station. Thank god we left early because we got lost. Horrifically lost. We ended up walking about 3 miles just to get back to the station, and went the long way around the main islands. I was desperate for the toilet and we were both sweaty and irritable. I even went to a public toilet to go, that's how desperate I was! We got back to the train station and we were absolutely shattered after all that walking and the heat. We got back to the hotel at 7ish and just spent time on the wifi for the evening!
