Today started at an US airport, which yet again reminded us of the futility of war. We then travelled on through fabulous countryside continuing along the Ho Chi Minh trail.
At one point we stopped at another site of an airfield which was the site they kept most of their stock of agent orange. All around you can see what that stuff did to the forests but harder to see was what it did to the people living in the area.
We also stopped at a graveyard of a local ethnic minority. Traditionally the body is buried and then years later the community organises a big local party and all the bodies are dug up, the bones cleaned and put into a small box which is then put into the family plot. So all the graves had the same date on it!!
We ended up in a home stay - see photo. It is the original home of a family who built a modern house next door and lets out their traditional home. It has a bamboo floor - which I am sure is strong enough to hold us and a log ladder to get up and down. As the loo is outside I do hope I will not need it during the night. However it does have WiFi - so all is well.
In the locality we have seen women weaving using a hand held weaving frame that is kept under tension by their feet. They sit on the floor with their feet straight out - for hours - bolt upright!! We watched the sunset in a hot pool fed by a natural spring - it was surreal. This was followed by an evening of music played on homemade instruments- including a 2 stringed guitar. Absolutely brilliant.
