dzasta travels
Well the Antanov 225 was coming in today so we decided we couldn't miss it. It is the biggest plane in the world and has never been to Australia before. We have had the smaller 124 has been here plenty of times but not this one.
It was due in at 10am and they were expecting 50,000 people to see it. We decided we needed to be there early so I left home just after 4am. When I got to Daz's he was sitting in the car with the engine running and ready to go. The officials said they were going to open up the viewing area at 7.30 and only allowing 400 people in so we wanted to be first in line at the gate. When we arrived at 4.45 there were about 20 cars in front of us. Just as we settled in for the wait they opened the gate, I think they wanted to get us off the road. That was good and bad, we got a good spot but we thought we were going to wait in the car not out in the cold.
We were rank amateurs compared to some of the geeks there They had all sorts of apps and frackers on their phones to track the plane and listen to the tower. A group of Asians next to us were getting live updates from KL, the last stop for the plane. They were the first to tell us it was going to be late.
All night the planes were coming in from the north and that was not ideal of us, the other way would have been better and he would have landed right in front of us. At about 9.30 it rained for about 15 min and the planes started coming in from the other way and it looked promising but it didn't last. Just before the Antanov arrived they switched round again.
Finally at about 11.45 it arrived. It was worth the wait as it taxied fight in front of us so we got a great look at it.
Getting out was another problem. All the roads around the airport had been gridlocked for at least 5km. There were cars parked everywhere. Seriously some people just don't care about anyone else. Some of the places they parked were ridiculous. Lucky we were pretty quick getting to the car so we passed most of them.
