dzasta travels
A few of us went to the Stockyard Gully caves for the long weekend. Some went Sat but I went Sunday. The cave was easy enough to find, even though it is 30 years since I have been there. Turn righ into Jurien Rd North from Indian ocean Dve and then Left onto Cockleshell Gully Rd. The gravel section west really good but it runs out and turns into a dirt track which is also good but you do need a 4 wheel drive for the clearance.
The caves are an old stock route and the drovers used to put their stock into the gully for food and water on a drive from north to Perth. It is clearly signposted and you can walk all the way through the cave (about 300mtr). We stopped on the way to Lake Indoon and ran into the other group that came up on Saturday. There are bee hives on the outside and bats hide in the roof.
The others decided they wanted to go to Sandy cape and some were going to go home from there. Sandy cape is about 10km north of Jurien and clearly sign posted. It is a great place to camp but everytime I have been there the place is full. I think you would have to be really lucky to get a place there. We walked up to the look out and one of the guys decided he wanted to drive on the beach. Parts of the beach are rock hard and parts are soft and you can guess where he found himself. A combination of inexperience and hard tyres and it turned into a snatch strap lesson.
We parted company and those staying headed back to Lake Indoon to camp for the night. Lake Indoon has a huge camping area with toilet and showers. During summer it is usually packed with Wake boarders but this time of the year there is not much water in it so perfect for us to camp there. We had a relaxing night around a small campfire. The only dampener was it rained in the night so everything is wet and we have to dry it when we get home.
As always I enjoyed it and I am looking forward to the next trip.
