dzasta travels
I woke up early so i decided to go to the Tsikiji fish markets. Kate had said she wanted to go so I rang them but surprisingly at 10 to 5 this morning Kate didnt seem quite so keen.
This morning is the coldest we have had since we got to Japan. I dont know what the temp got down to but I have not felt that cold here before. The two train rides to the market were a lot warmer so that was a bonus. You have to go early if you want to see the tuna auction. It is just a bunch of Japanese blokes yelling at each other in Japanese. Other than that the markets are just like any other markets anywhere in the world. These are mostly about tuna and everywhere you see them cutting them up. Either with a band saw when they are frozen, or with a samauri sword when they have thawed out. I didnt see much unusual stuff and not a lot of crabs and prawns that I was expecting.
I decided to walk to the Imperial Palace which was just the other side of Tokyo city. It was a straight forward walk and I had no trouble finding my way. I was walking cos I was lookin for a Macca's so I could get hot coffee. Didnt find the Macca's but did find the Palace. Should have done a little research cos the place is closed on monday. Seems His Majesty had forgotten to put my name on the gate so I couldnt get in. I still walked around it.
No big deal I still have plan B, which I just made up. Keep walkin and go to Kagurazaka. There are a couple of old shrines and it is supposed to be like the "old" Tokyo. I managed to find 3 in the maze of small streets and alleyways. One of them, Tsukudo Hachiman shrine has the oldest torii in Shinjuku-ku. Since I was in Shinjuku-ku (suburb) you would think it would be easy to get a train back to Shinjuku? It wasnt and I got lost but made it with 4 changes when it should have been 3 changes.
I was wondering why all the flags are at half mast today and I think it is the 1st aniversary of the Japanese tsunami
Ash and Laura went back to Harajuku for the day ......shopping.
Chris and Kate went to Shibuya for the day.......shopping.
Aparently you just cant get enough...shopping. We all me up again tonight and went to Shibuya to check the place out at night and for dinner. Dinner was a mission but we got there in the end.
