After a good Sunday Roast in the Pub last night and a hotel style breakfast this morning we set off to see the highest waterfall in Tasmania. We drove through lots of woodland and arrived at the waterfall. To get to the base we had to walk down a path which was full of fabulous tree ferns. After a few minutes walk we arrived at the viewing platform for this beautiful waterfall. After the recent rains it was in full flow and looked magnificent.
On the way back we visited the Pigin the Paddock pub where the resident pig drank beer. Well this morning he must have had a hangover because he was hiding in his little shed and all we saw was a sheep with the mange, who didn’t drink beer!
Next stop was a cheese factory with tastings. At the back the cows came for automatic milking as and when they felt in need and on their way back out to the field got a sort of massage from a big rotating brush. (Pamper Parlour for cows)
We returned to St Helens and had lunch at a great bakery who had a good selection of pies.
In the afternoon we were taken up another promontory to beaches which again had fine silver squeaky sand and turquoise waters. This area is called the Bay of Fires because the early explorers saw the aboriginal fires burning along the coastline. It is also famous for the orange algae which forms on the rocks. Lots of Free Camping sites along here and a diverse selection of camping outfits from vans to tents to on top of the car tents. ( ok until you need to get up in the night!!)
Another meal at the Pub tonight where the food was good and we were ready to move on again this morning.
Bill our Drive ver told us he wanted an early start and we were on the road by 8.30.
We now headed north west and the weather was iffy going from sun - not much to heavy rain - lots and the temperatures were low.
First stop was a winery where we sampled some very good Pinot Gris among others we then gave Bill orders to find a picnic table with cover which he did, so we fed him. Then another cheese factory and finally a chocolate factory. All these were small enterprises but good to see. We ended up at Ulverston at the home of Sues brother and sister in law who have given us a bed for 2 nights.
They wined and dined us and we are now hoping for a decent day tomorrow to go up Cradle Mountain.
