Well back in Oaxaca for the third year running. I really do like this place - it just has a special feeling to it. And this time there was an added meaning. Last year I was involved in a photography project with an organisation from the USA called Memory Project. I photographed just over 500 children (4 photos of each). These photos were then given to art students who produced portraits of each child based on the photos. In addition they added a personal message to each child. So last Saturday we presented about 400-450 kids with their portraits. The reaction, the smiles and the excitement was unbelievable. I think the parents in many instances were more excited than the kids. It was so good to be there to see the end of something that I was involved with at the start, over 12 months ago. It was also great to meet the Ryan and Cheridyn from the Memory Project, who until now were just some faceless people at the end of an email. And to some extent all that overshadowed the rest of my time in Oaxaca. Sure I got to some villages in the valley that I hadn't seen before, did some more people watching in the zocalo which is always good fun and just admired how the Mexican people of this town seem to go about their daily business despite the poverty that many of them live in. Strangers are welcomed and accommodated, even when they b******ise the Spanish language, or don't use it at all, and generosity is always there. And no more was this in action than at my Airbnb. Fantastic place, genuine Mexican hospitality from Lazaro and Magdelana. I might just have to head back for a 4th time!
