Well Monday was a "no school" day for the kids but no one knows why. Very few turned up and those that did enjoyed a morning at the playground again. Not as many to swing this time so a little less tiring. The remainder of the week was pretty much routine - school centre, Spanish revision and then 3 hours of lessons. Our host did tell us about a good taco place close to home so Natalie and I decided to give it a test run. It was a great tip. Sensational tacos, fresh and flavoursome for about 75 cents each. Only down side was they didn't serve beer but we fixed that with a visit to a local bar afterwards. I think I'm making progress with my Spanish but at times I really wonder. It seems to be a language built around a multitude of verbs, all essentially the same but spelt and pronounced differently. Celebrated the end of the week with dinner at a local sushi restaurant. Not very Mexican but sometimes you just need some variety. On the way home found a beer tasting bar. Locally brewed artesan beers. Opted for the American Pale Ale which was very flavoursome but quite heavy. Saturday was a beautiful day, ideal for wandering the streets in the north west section of the Centro zone. Lots of little lanes and alleys. Some incredible stone work in archways and walls and some great street art. Eventually headed over to the Abastos Mercado. This is a very traditional and local market. Best described as organised chaos. Just skirted around the outside but even from there the range of goods being sold was incredible. Think of something and I can assure you it was there. I was actually looking for the collectivo bus stop. These are mini vans which head to country towns, which is where I want to head to next week. Sort of found it -I think! Lunch and people watching at the Zocalo. Always a great way to pass some time. Sunday was a day of culture. It's also a very quiet day in the town. Many places are closed and the streets are unusually empty. The upside is that many of the museums have free entry on Sunday. Started off at the Museum of Oaxacan Cultures. It is located in some former monastery buildings attached to Santo Domingo Cathedral. Despite everything being written in Spanish it was a great experience. The building itself is stunning and the exhibits are exceptionally well displayed and fairly much self explanatory. From here it was off to the Museum of Contemporary Arts. A fantastic photography exhibition of the works of Sibylle Bergemann. A rest in the zocalo and then to the Museum of Oaxacan Painters. The current exhibition features female Oaxacan artists. Some stunning pieces depicting Oaxacan life. And finally to the Museum of Textiles. An extensive display of traditional indigenous female dresses. Some very intricate and extremely colourful designs. In typical Oaxacan style the afternoon sun was getting extremely hot so I decided to call it a day. A real pineapple fruit icy pole as I walked home was the perfect way to end it. Loving being in this city. Might have to start checking out the real estate guide!

Alexis McPhee Sounds like you have definitely immersed yourself into the cultural aspects the city. What an awesome experience!! Also appears that you have found an alternative place to live vs Balmoral??? I have one question.....are you living with a local family? I haven't read any posts that indicate where you are residing. Enjoying your blogs.
