It's Day 2 in Oaxaca and i am settling in well. My host, Rosa, is a lovely woman and thankfully she speaks a little English. However my formal Spanish lessons start tomorrow and we have agreed that Espanol will be the main language spoken once i start. That should make for some interesting conversations. Also staying here and working at the same school as me is a 17 year old girl (Natalie) from Los Angeles. She is doing a 3 week stint during her summer holiday period. She is very mature for her age and her desire to help people less fortunate than herself is so commendable for someone so young. The fact that her parents allowed her to come by herself is incredible. Fortunately she has studied Spanish for 3 years so to date has been my unofficial interpreter. We have met the Director of the school and had a tour. It seems to be a well maintained place. We will be working from 10am-2pm each day. We have spent the last 2 days wandering the city. For me it is just as pleasant and welcoming as it was 12 months ago, so I am pleased that I hadn't viewed it through rose coloured glasses on my last visit. Temperature is in the high 20's but it is also the rainy season and we have copped our fair share, mainly in the afternoons. So with that comes humidity. Fortunately my damaged camera lens seems to be working okay so I'll keep my fingers crossed it stays that way. The reason why I'm here starts in earnest tomorrow. A little anxious but the enthusiasm hasn't dimmed so I'm confident that it will be a positive experience for all.

Maria Beraldo I'm so pleased that things have got off to a good start and that your plans are starting to come together and take shape. I trust that things will only get better from now on.
Alexis McPhee Great to hear that all is going well so far. Good luck with the Spanish lessons!! Sounds like Natalie will be great help. What happened to your camera?
