We have to check out at 10am today so we all have an easy morning around the hotel. Leisurely brekky, a bit of a chat and catching up on social media. I know, I know! A few of us head into town to check out the San Domingo cathedral. Another stunning building. Off to our favourite restaurant for coffee and cake and a good browse through the art/craft shop. Some absolutely beautiful pieces of work. There is a young artist hand painting a bowl in the same pattern that his father had done years before. It will take him around 1 month to complete and the selling price will be 35,000 pesos (around $3000). Warren, Sue, Pat and I head to the Rufino Tamayo Prehispanic Art Museum. The art pieces, principally clay figurines, dating back 2000 years were collected by Rufino himself. It is a well presented and fascinating place. We then head to the main cathedral and upon exiting it is raining so we find a spot at a restarant under cover and enjoy a few quiet drinks. Despite the rain there is still a lot of activity and it is interesting and intriguing to watch the locals go about their everyday business. When the rain stops we start making our way home and get caught up in a student graduation ceremony which is making its way through the streets. Lots of music and beers. Back at the hotel we head off for a 10 minute walk to the bus station and our 11 hour bus ride to San Cristobal. About an hour after we depart something seems to be wrong. It turns out that a teacher demonstration further up the road has blocked our path and we will need to make a detour to avoid it. Its a slow trip with lots of winding roads and stopping and starting. But the bus is very good. Male and female toilets, hot water for coffee, on board movies and seats that almost recline flat. I have trouble sleeping though and the night goes slowly. The protest has delayed us about an hour and we get into San Cristobal around 8 in the morning.
