Day 33. Leaving Kalbarri this morning we pass the large white sand hills of Lucky Bay and drive alongside the Pink Lake, not so pink from where we see it! Turning south again on the North West Ocean Highway No. 1 we head for quaint heritage town of Northampton for fuel and morning tea. The old church and monastery here was designed by architect/priest Monsignor John Hawes who was very active in the early 1900s. Born in England and influenced by Italian and French architecture, we will see more of his unique work as we tour Mullewa and Geraldton. Turning off the highway we detour today through the Chapman Valley to the old northern wheat belt town of Mullewa to see the wildflowers. Along the way we can see rolling green pastures of wheat and lupins. In Mullewa we view the old church again designed by Monsignor Hawes who lived here for many years, a church very unusual for a country town and somewhat gothic with towers and domes and beautiful red sandstone blocks. A quick walk around the wildflowers trail near town we are disappointed as they are not very spectacular this season. Further south we enter the Coal Seam Conservation Park and the wild flowers and gorge are just amazing. Expansive carpets of everlasting wild flowers in white, blue, pink, yellow and red. We then head west to the city of Geraldton through more rolling green wheat country arriving mid afternoon. Heavy traffic, we are not used to this as we have been ‘bush’ for over a month! A walk along the esplanade on sunset we can see the large port operations. Dinner tonight at the best pub in town, the Freemasons Hotel, very busy. Distance today 370km, warm and windy 25 degrees.
