Day 22. Heading south today to Carnarvon which sits just above the Tropic of Capricorn. Carnarvon is the food bowl of Western Australia on the mighty but dry Gascoyne River which flows 600 km into the Indian Ocean. A short detour into Coral Bay for a stroll on the white sand beach with its turquoise water. So many caravans filling the 3 van parks, what do all these hundreds of grey nomads do all day as none on the beach! Pasties and coffees at the local bakery...

Day 21. Up early again and down to the marina as we are going fishing out into the Exmouth Gulf on a small charter boat with Jay our skipper and 6 other fisher hopefuls. Fast boat trip out into the Indian Ocean leaving the tip of the North West Cape far behind with a distant view of Vlamming Lighthouse and Ningaloo Reef. Slow bottom fishing at first but Jay skilfully moved the boat to several drop off locations and then the fish were on! Big giant trevally, red ...

Day 20. Up early as we are going fishing from the beach at Ningaloo Reef. Beautiful sunrise as we pass by the 13 huge communications aerials from a time when they used to talk to submarines. Who knows who they are talking to now? Up to Vlaming Head lighthouse for a fabulous view of the Exmouth Gulf and the world heritage Ningaloo Reef. Whales frolicking in the blue water. Day 19. Chatting to our new road train driver mates in Onslow, we head off down the highway on our way to Exmouth. Past the vast spinifex anthill colony and the white salt pans, we turn once again onto the Coastal Highway and head south west through the beautiful red mountainous Cane River Conservation Park and past Nanutarra Roadhouse. Day 18. Up early as we are going fishing. Out to 4 Mile Creek we cast into the lagoon but no luck. A long walk over to the adjacent beach we are now fishing the Indian Ocean for the big fish. Not much luck, but Paul the Reliable caught a nice bream on very light gear which provided a sporty fight. Wind picking up SE and blowing red sand.
