Whereas everyone else got up at 8ish & headed off to the ruins, we thought we'd take our time & strolled over there at 10am or so. We started with the museum which was excellent, with multiple, different sized original stone carvings, along with a whole monumental shrine/building moved inside from it's location within the ruins. It was quite fascinating & educating. We then headed into the ruins themselves, but weren't able (to my disappointment) to find a guide. However the museum had given us enough insight & info to pretty much not need a guide. We started with the many Stelas (tall stone blocks with carvings on each of the sides), then saw the Heiroglyphic stairway & ball court in one of the plazas. The game played in this ball court was not something I'd have joined in with, as my ball skills are crap & the loser in the game was sacrificed!! After this we headed up the Temple of Inscriptions to look out over the plazas of the Acropolis, before heading down into the tunnels dug by archaeologists to explore the temples & buildings buried beneath the newer temples. (It seems each new Mayan ruler in this area had their temples built on top of their predecessors temples). A quick look around the royal & cemetery area finished the ruins & led us onto a slightly p1ss poor nature trail with a dead end! After seeing the macaws, our trip to the ruins concluded & we walked back to town, absolutely knackered. A snack & drink pepped us up slightly, before I spent a while doing 'office work' after which we headed to the bar for drinks. The girls appeared around 8pm to join us & the 4 of us stayed there until about 11pm, when Tanja headed to bed & Rach, Sara & I headed next door to the locals bar. Rach spent the evening dancing salsa, etc. with gay guys (who surprisingly didn't know they were gay!), while I chatted to Sara & a couple from SPS. Far too many Cuba libras, tequilas & boogies later, we left & headed back at about 3:30am!
