Days out in London
We haven't moved from London over the last few weeks but have been very busy
each day. I cooked a great guinea fowl and was very pleased with the outcome much
nicer than chicken. Yesterday we went to Harrods and I bought a pigeon which I am
cooking tonight we also enjoyed scones Jam and clotted cream and a pot of exotic
tea at Fortnum and Mason one of my favourite shops. Everything in this shop is exquisite
and of course expensive you don't see lots and lots of product , it is all displayed beautifully
and I think only the rich shop there. 1 handkerchief was 20.00 pounds ie $30.00 to us and
a small handkerchief as well. I fell in love with a piece of glass ware it was only 1200 pounds
hence I did not buy it.
We went to Wimbledon on the first day and thank goodness we did as it was not as crowded
and no queue. It was a 15 minutes from the station and the atmosphere was fantastic as
everyone walked along. There were stands outside houses people selling lemonade,
sausages etc. Houses in the street also advertise parking if they have large areas in front.
When we arrived we still had another 10 minutes of walking because we did not have tickets
we had to cross a golf course and queue up with the campers that were staying over night
to get tickets for the next day. It was lots of fun we received a GUIDE TO QUEUEING, thank
goodness there was no queues and we could move straight in after going through security.
It was 20 pounds each (about $30) to get into the grounds and worth it, we were stuffed by
the time we got there so first stop was some lunch and a sit down we then wandered around
the grounds watching the outside matches and warm up courts.
Another day, Robert and I parted company at Waterloo and he went to Bond Street and I
along Southbank. Had a great day walked from Waterloo to Tower Bridge so many
interesting buildings, Tate modern, globe theatre and the fantastic warehouses. The
Tate Modern building is 1947 Art Deco it is stunning it use to be a power station. I
ended up at the Borough Market - food lots of food it was great. Wandered around
in the backstreets with cobble lanes and found the southwalk cathedral I would have
sworn I saw the ghost of the little match girl.
*** The Little Match Girl was a story my mother use to tell, we loved it, always
made us cry when we were little. We would insist she tell us over and over
again, it was written by Hans Christian Andersen but I am sure she changed bits
because she told it from memory
I wandered back a different way and found my way to Waterloo - the street signage is
fantastic so easy to find your way around I never have a street map.
Another day I left Robert at home, train to Waterloo then the underground to Tower Bridge
I went to see Hays galleria which is a conversion of one of London's most famous wharfs.
It was the food larder of London all the tall ships use to come into this wharf.
From here I walked to Tower Bridge and went up to the top and walked along the
high level walkways and of course went down into the engine room
Robert has been to Lords to see Harrow and Eton play cricket, I stayed home and
did the house work.
We only have one month left ........ then home
We are going to Brussels, Koblenz, either Zurich or Como, Florence I think Venice,
Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Wurzburg or rothenberg, Frankfurt with day trip
to Heidelberg and a boat trip on the Rhine. We fly home from Frankfurt'
