Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Turkey's relationship with Korea in the modern age started with the Korean War when Turkey was a large participant. I was surprised to learn that Turkey had the third highest foreign casualties after the US and UK (Canada and Aus are 4th & 5th). Some Turks settled in Korea after the war and a few Koreans began to convert to Islam. They started a large muslim neighbourhood in Itaewon Seoul, but also settled in other parts of Korea including Busan.

The UN Cemetary in Busan pays tribute to the large contribution of Turkish troops and they have several large plots for their fallen soldiers. Some countries have their own monuments and tributes and for Turkish troops they had a glass cabinet with the uniform and belongings of a soldier. They also had a special exhibit while I was there about the contribution of Turkish Soldiers. Ankara Turkey also has a monument to the Korean War.

Their most significant presence in Busan outside the UN cemetary would be the Busan Mosque and Turkish Kebab house outside. The mosque is a mix of mainly Turks, Uzbeks, and Indonesians but was quite full for Friday prayers. The Imam was a korean muslim. Directly outside the mosque is the Turkish Restaurant. Here you can get a wide variety of menu items and the interior is decorated with ceramic tiles, smoking pipes, and other nostalgia items, while traditional turkish music plays.

Turkish Donar Kebab is also available in other places. Downtown in the Nampodong shopping area there is a cart setup in the Pusan Film Festival Tourist Zone. Also there is another mobile truck that will set up in different parts of town on different days, although the guy is Pakistani from Baluchistan. In the Lotte Dept Store also downtown I found Pasha Kebab House which even has a wood fired kiln for baking bread and ceramic turkish tiles around.
Finally, opposite Busan Station near the Russian area they have Samarkand Uzbekistan Restaurant, another Turkic people, with hybrid Russian/Arab dishes, and menus in Russian script. This is the same family that has an restaurant of the same name by Daegu Station and Itaewon Seoul. Sometimes they play a satellite Uzbek music channel. Here is a video I filmed of their restaurant in Itaewon Seoul

So there is a variety of halal food choices for me not far from Daegu and dont have to trek all the way to Itaewon Seoul anymore. I even did a lesson on Turkey during Winter camp and have included two slides. Turkey and Korea played each other in the Fifa World Cup Semi Final 2002 which Korea hosted and Turkey finished 4th to Koreas 3rd.
Busan is known as 'the Bu'. The Turks were also in the other Bu, Budapest from 1541 to 1686, but thats another story... and a previous trip...
