We arrived at Warrawong Sanctuary on Thursday afternoon. After meeting everyone and doing the necessary paperwork we walked around the 35 acre grounds and saw the wildlife found here. We fed the Wallabies, Kangaroos, ducks and swans and we even spotted a few Koalas high up in the trees. The rest of the afternoon was spent settling in.
Then came the storms...rain, thunder, lightening and strong winds. So Friday, Saturday and Sunday were a wash out!!!! Although, Friday morning we went out in the rain to do a daily check of the perimeter fence to look for any damage/holes where predators could get in. We got totally soaked through despite the ponchos we were wearing. After a very long, hot shower we relaxed in front of the TV and became acquainted with Aussie programmes...including Deal or No Deal!!!!! The rest of the weekend was spent relaxing in front of the TV as the rain NEVER stopped!!!!!
Today we finally began work and learnt our daily routine. In the morning we feed the Kangaroos, the birds and get food ready for the possums and lizards. Then we may help out with the daily animal shows in the late morning and after lunch we help out with grounds maintenance. Today was a little different because due to the storms the perimeter fence had been damaged in three places, so we had to help fix it. However, when digging out one of the corner fence posts we realised it was cemeted in!!...needless to say it was a job to get it out!!! But in the end, and after much sweat and tears, we won and it came out. This took the whole afternoon so tomorrow we will continue to fix the fence.
