Today was our last working day at Warrawong. Over the past week Donna has been doing lots of the manual work and walks as Dan's foot is still badly bruised and sore. Instead, he has been helping out in the cafe, rolling cutlery, folding napkins and also helping cut up the fresh food for the smaller creatures. Donna has also helped alot this week with the animal shows and got to hold lots of different reptiles!!!! The kids seem to love looking at and squeezing the animals!!!
Whilst doing the fence walk today, Donna had another great koala experience. I walked around one of the corners of the fence and on the other side I heard movement. I thought it was just a wallaby hopping off but when I looked it was a large koala bounding across the woodland floor. It was quite fast and then jumped up onto the base of a gum tree. It then started to climb up the tree and finally stopped sat in the tree and looking at me. It was very cute with his ears pricked up and then he wouldn't take his eyes off of me until I started to walk away. Another great experience at Warrawong and one we probably would not have had if we weren't here!
The afternoon today saw the Grand Final of AFL (Austrailian Football League - Aussie rules), both teams from Melbourne fighting it out to be champions of the season. All week there were many lead up shows on the TV and it was a major highlight of the Aussie sporting calender. One of our workmates here at Warrawong, invited us around to his place to watch the match and learn the rules! We soon got into the aussie spirit of the game and we witnessed history as it was the first time the final had ended in a draw since 1977. The bizarre rules of the AFL final state that if a draw occurs then a rematch must take place rather than playing extra time and crowning a winner. Therefore the rematch will take place next Saturday in Melbourne when hopefully and winner will be decided. By coincedence we will actually be in Melbourne by then, so we will certainly have to watch the match, maybe even on a big screen in the city centre! Think it'll be an unforgettable experience!!!
