On 28th we stopped for a few hours in the port of Vinh before catching the overnight train to Hanoi. The Vietnamese trains are not as comfortable as the Malaysian and Thai trains. We had 6 berths to a compartment. We arrived in Hanoi at 5.30 a.m. Quite a shock- Hanoi is VERY hectic - motor scooters everywhere all sounding their horns constantly. On 29th we travelled by bus to Halong Bay where we had an overnight cruise. I'm sure Halong Bay is stunning when the sun shines, but unfortunately we only saw it through heavy mist and fog. The fog was so thick in the morning we got lost returning to the dock! We had a city tour on Monday 31st , visiting the Hanoi Hilton (Hoa Lo Prison), the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, the One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature. All of the sites are being,or have been restored,as they have suffered heavily through war, weather and neglect. Tonight we took the train to Hue. We travelled with a young Vietnamese woman and her 3 year old son who entertained us until "lights out"!
