Rain Rain Go Away! This is supposed to be the Sunshine State, Bundaberg Qld: Mon Tues 25, 26 June 2012
Monday:
Drizzling rain all day today and after getting drenched on our 280km return ride to the town of 1770 yesterday we were in no mood for more of the same, so we decided to stay put in our cosy tent. By midday we were getting cabin fever, so we donned our wet weather gear and went walking down to the little shops in Bargara a kilometre away, which was a lovely walk as we were going along the beach footpath. We dined on a yummy chicken chilli wrap each with a cup of coffee; only cost $6.50 each, as we gazed over the wintery ocean. Then it was back to our tent, reading newspapers and drinking Chinese green tea. I finished off a book I was reading as well. We decided to stay an extra 2 days in the Bundaberg region because the computer weather sites showed lots more rain coming, dammit! No point in packing a tent up in the pouring rain, we have learned this before!
Tuesday 26th June:
Laundry day today, seeing as how we are running out of clean undies and socks. The skies looked like they were clearing up, so we hopped on our bikes and headed off to Bundaberg, which is 14km away. We bought a new motorbike rain over-jacket for me, as my old one was leaking badly. Then the skies opened and it rained heavily for the rest of the day. Never mind, we are the determined Mighty Intrepids, and we didn't feel like being holed up in our tent today, so we rode on to the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens and went walking around in our motorbike rain gear. No one else was out walking, funny that.
We had a nice little lunch in the café at the gardens, then paid Seniors prices to see a local museum there, as the rain pelted down outside.
We had to ride back to our Shangri-La tent in heavy rain, stopping to shop for food at a supermarket and dripping water along their floors as we slogged along.
Our evening meal was great. There's a girls' hockey tournament happening here and the camper's kitchen was full of their happy parents looking forward to a bit of a party after a day out in the rain. And a couple of senior motorcyclists like us were very welcome to this party….much merriment over a couple of wines was had by all.
