Travelling to Clermont - 27th July
This was to be one of our longer trips that we have done for some time, only a distance of 396km and the thought of a cabin at the end of the day. We were expecting a long straight and boring trip but instead the scenery and road was quite varied and interesting. We had been told by some people that hit a kangaroo on the road recently that it was littered with road kill and that there was a lot of road works. The roadwork turned out to be freshly laid tar and stones but the speed signs hadn't been taken down yet, so not a problem. The road kill was less than we had been experiencing recently with the only difference being three very large very black wild pig bodies at various stages of the trip. A string of Pilot escort vehicles occupying the whole road followed by a Police car with all lights flashing alerted us to an approaching Wide Load. The load was 6.5m wide so we had to run off the road shoulder and down a slight embankment to get out of the way while it passed.
Later we came across another string of pilot Vehicles and Police car but this time we had to do a U turn and go back a few hundred meters to a large parking area on the side of the road. They were holding all vehicles there to allow a 7m wide load to pass. As it turned out the truck with the load had a blown tyre and would limp into that area to change the tyre. Once it arrived we continued on our way. On arrival in Clermont we settled into our comfy cabin did grocery shopping and relaxed for the evening with a real bed and real TV.
