Heading north to Brisbane - 4th June 2012
We awoke to beautiful blue skies in Byron Bay. We still had images of the previous night of the so called Whale Ceremony down at the main beach. At sunset the hippies from the region assembled on the water's edge with all their different drumming instruments and the drumming began accompanied by lots of swaying hand twirling and dancing. There was also the obligatory fire juggling. The smell of a bit of hooch drifted around but at least everyone was happy and having fun.
All that behind us now and time to pack up. There had been slight rain overnight and the tent was damp on the outside. A combination of Dave sacrificing his towel, what a hero, the little heater going flat out inside the tent and the wonderful sunshine, soon had the tent dry ready for packing up.
For once we had decided to head straight up the Princess Highway and not to do the usual back roads thing. GPS, Sena Bluetooth and off we went like some sort of bird mating dance. Me calling the tune to Trish following behind, over the Bluetooth intercom. " Going to overtake this truck, move to right lane", "Can you get back to the left lane?" Trish replying with things like "I'm two cars back but will catch up soon". And so we manoeuvred our way towards Brisbane. I saw my first cane fields but we were in NSW and not Queensland.
We had a lunch break at a wayside Pie shop which just happened to have a "Big Pie" on a pole out the front. Another "Big" for my tacky big collection. It only seemed a short time after that and we were slipping along the freeway roads built out over the Brisbane River right in the heart of Brisbane and on to our camp ground. This was the same river that we had watched on TV at home, flooding with all that damage over a year ago. To look now you would not know what had happened.
The caravan park turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. Friendly staff, another site where our tent backs onto a fence with parkland behind and best of all a great campers' kitchen.
