Day 38 - A warm start to the day with temperatures predicted to be well into the 30's Carmel & Elaine decided that it would be a good day to wash clothes and have them dry while we drove to Sienna, a town about 40km south. This is a town of 53,00 people and is well known for its Piazza del Campo where twice a year (1 week-end in July & 1 in August ) they hold a bare back horse race around the Piazza. The city has no traffic so we had to park in a gazetted parking area outside the high walls surrounding the city and walk about 1km, a rather warm experience. Typical of many streets in these cities, they are narrow and old cobblestoned streets lined with many small shops, mainly eateries, or shops selling leather good or souvenirs. The other main attraction here was a very old, large church called the Divina Bellaza located in the equally large Piazza del Duomo. A few hours later we were heading over the mountains to another walled town of Poggibonsi. These Italians sure have some funny names. The trip home was via the M2 freeway, a lot different to the mountain roads we had been on most of the day. It was nice to relax & eat in for a 2nd night in a row.
