Nelson....beautiful Nelson. Oh what a find! We had seen a photo of this picturesque riverside town while visiting the 12 Apostles and decided that this was our next destination.

Nelson is about 5kms from the VIC/SA boarder and is situated along the Glenelg River. The town consisted of; info centre, kiosk, caravan park and pub!!! The caravan park "River Vu" is owned by a lovely family from Canada and only had 16 sites. We were lucky and decided to book in for 2 nights and grabbed the last site available (we had to pay extra for the ensuite site - a whole $1/day!!!).

We met a fantastic couple at the pub when we went to have dinner. Keith and Belinda were from SA and travelling for 11 days in a RV after going to a wedding and were also staying at the van park. We joined them for dinner (luckily because the pub was actually booked out and we didn't have a reservation!!), shared a few drinks (needed 4 coopers beers for a hat!), a few laughs and walked back home together.

The next morning we woke to beautiful hot sunny day (been freezing cold since NYE) and decided to see if our new friends wanted to share in boat hire for a few hours so we could explore the Glenelg River. Keith was out captain and we cruised across the VIC/SA boarder, beer in hand only to have to turn around so we could get the boat back in time. An evening rendevous at their RV was set so we could view some footage of the Coorong (near where they live in SA), have a few more drinks (few too many) and dinner. It was a fantastic night and I haven't laughed so hard in ages! I hope we can catch up with them again.

Nelson was just magic. We had finally escaped the craziness of the Great Ocean Road and found a nice, quiet, relaxing place to chill for a few days. It was about to change however with the annual fishing competition starting the next day.

Highly recommended to anyone travelling down this way.....would have loved to stay much longer! You can hire a kayak and paddle up stream to isolated jettys that have campgrounds along the river and there are plenty of fish to catch.
